BIOGRAPHY

Jaco Pastorius, born John Francis Anthony Pastorius III, was an American jazz bassist born on December 1, 1951, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and died on September 21, 1987, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Considered one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time, he has performed with renowned artists such as Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, and Herbie Hancock. His self-titled solo album, released in 1976, is considered a jazz-fusion classic. He also recorded two albums with his Word of Mouth group: "Word of Mouth" (1981) and "Twins" (1982). Pastorius grew up in Fort Lauderdale where he began his musical career as a drummer in high school rock bands. He then studied classical music, playing the tuba in the school orchestra, before turning to jazz and the double bass. After studying double bass at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he released his first solo album in 1976, joining the jazz-fusion group Weather Report, with whom he collaborated on five albums. In 1981, he founded the Word of Mouth group and recorded two albums. Tragically, he died in a road accident in Fort Lauderdale in 1987 at the age of 36. Throughout his career, Jaco Pastorius has collaborated with many great names in jazz such as Weather Report, Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, among others. His musical legacy lives on through landmark works such as his solo album "Jaco Pastorius" (1976), a true jazz-fusion classic.
