BIOGRAPHY
Alfons X (1254-1284), also known as Alfonso X, was King of Castile, León and Galicia from 30 May 1252 until his death. During his reign, Alfonso X oversaw the completion of the Reconquista in Spain, culminating in the defeat of the last Muslim stronghold of Granada in 1257. He also sponsored the Castilian translation of a large number of philosophical and astronomical texts, most notably the Alfonsine Tables, which were used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage to the Americas in 1492. Alfonso X is widely regarded as one of the most influential medieval rulers in Spanish history.
