Jamie Stewart is an American musician and producer, born on June 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, California. He is the founder and leader of experimental rock band Xiu Xiu.
Stewart grew up in a musical family and began playing music at the age of five. At eighteen, he left home to study music at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating, he moved to New York, where he worked as a studio assistant and producer.
In 2002, Stewart founded Xiu Xiu with his friend and Berkeley colleague, Cory McCullough. The band released their debut album, Knife Play, the same year, and has since released eight studio albums, including Always in 2012. In addition to his work with Xiu Xiu, Stewart has collaborated with numerous other artists, such as Deerhoof, Dirty Beaches, Zola Jesus, and Laura Gibson.
Aside from his musical career, Stewart is also an accomplished filmmaker, having directed several short films and two feature films, including his latest, Angel Guts: Red Classroom, in 2014. He currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter.
